Defense Markets

In next generation power systems for defense, auxiliary fluid systems for lubrication and actuation are replaced with electrical components. These “more-electric” systems offer:

  • Increased system reliability - eliminates pumps, valves, filters, heat exchangers, ducting
  • Reduced size and weight - eliminates auxiliary equipment and increases the power density of machinery and electronics
  • Reduced maintenance - allows remote, unattended operation and increases system availability
  • Improved efficiency - reduces the fluid shear losses associated with lubricants
  • Improved safety - eliminates lubricants, reducing the exposure of personnel to hazardous chemicals and the potential for fire
  • Environmentally friendly systems--eliminates the storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous waste

Synchrony’s magnetic bearings and starter-generators are enabling technologies for more-electric systems. Developed in collaboration with leading gas turbine engine companies for mission-critical power and propulsion systems, the target defense applications include:

  • US Army’s Future Combat Systems (FCS) vehicles
  • US Navy DD(X) Destroyer electrical system
  • US Navy Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) electrical system
  • Mobile electric power Generation systems
  • US Navy high speed, minimum draft, river patrol craft

Synchrony works with OEMs to develop custom embedded systems suitable for high production.
