Synchrony Announces Fusion Magnetic Bearing

ROANOKE, VIRGINIA--September 25, 2006 - Synchrony today announced the introduction of a new magnetic bearing product that significantly improves the performance, reliability, applicability, and affordability for compressors, pumps, turbines, fans, motors, and other rotating machinery.

Synchrony’s new Fusion line of magnetic bearings integrates all the electronics within the bearing itself, while maintaining a size envelope that is smaller than other magnetic bearings of equivalent load capacity. In the past, magnetic bearings required a separate electronic control system that was located in a cabinet external to the machine. In many applications, the control system was located more than 300 ft from the machine. This required many big, long wires carrying high currents to the magnets. It also required many long sensor leads and sensor calibration for each installation.

Connections to the Fusion bearing consist of a low voltage supply (48 VDC) and an Ethernet cable for setup, health monitoring, and trending. The integrated nature of the design allows the bearing to continuously monitor the health of the power semiconductor devices and the coils. Additionally, key machine performance parameters such as load, speed, and vibration are monitored.

The Fusion bearings will be developed in a series of frame sizes. The first frame size has a baseline load capacity of 300 lb and a rotational speed of approximately 30,000 rpm. The radial bearing can be lengthened to achieve a capacity of 600 lbs.

Alpha and beta testing will be completed in the 4th quarter with production units available in early 2007. This first frame size will include radial and thrust designs. Other frame sizes will be available later in 2007.
