High Speed Motors with Integrated Controls

There is a growing need for high speed motors and generators that directly couple (without gears) to high performance compressors, pumps, turbines, and other high performance industrial machines. Direct-drive systems eliminate the need for lubricants, and offer improved reliability, efficiency, and maintainability.

To meet this need, Synchrony offers high speed, high efficiency motors and generators supported on magnetic bearings and packaged as an integrated drive train. The drive trains incorporate permanent magnet motors, and achieve a very high efficiency. Drive trains with power ratings between 100 kW and 400 kW are available.

The digital processing and the power electronics for the magnetic bearings are integrated into the drive trains as an onboard electronics package. This greatly reduces the field wiring and onsite tuning of the magnetic bearing that is typically required. In addition, the onboard electronics are provided with spare processing power, analog I/O, digital I/O, and stepper motor drivers. OEMs may use this capability to control and monitor the performance of the machine. Often, the need for a separate processor or PLC to control the machine is eliminated.
