High Temperature Integral Starter Generators

Synchrony offers an advanced integral starter generator (ISG) that can be directly driven by a gas turbine engine. Because of its ability to operate at high speeds and temperatures, it can be located internal or in close proximity to the engine, without the need for a gearbox.

Synchrony' s ISGs incorporate switched reluctance machine technology, which offers:

  • High speed structure eliminates permanent magnets and conductors in the rotor
  • High temperature design uses proprietary insulation system for coil windings and is not limited by the operating temperature of permanent magnets or composites
  • High efficiency
  • Inherent fault tolerance with three or more independent electrical phases
  • Novel magnetic structure reduces the size and weight of the ISG and its associated electronics
  • Improved vibration control and support of shaft:
novel magnetic structure and control algorithm improves the dynamic performance of the turbomachine by providing lateral stiffness and damping

Synchrony is developing the ISG and power conditioning unit (PCU) for a supersonic missile for the US Navy denoted RATTLRS. Synchrony's proprietary high temperature design enables operation of the ISG during supersonic flight conditions.
