As we celebrate Black History Month and the momentous achievements of the Black community, we cannot close our eyes to the injustices this community has faced. We approach this month with hope and a firm understanding that the work of building a more just society continues.
Since our founding, we have been committed to racial and social justice. These are core beliefs infused into every aspect of our business, including how we treat employees, customers, partners and the communities in which we operate. For that, we are proud.
In 2020 we had to take a pause in celebrating that journey. The tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others, along with the rise of social unrest and the movement that followed, were stark reminders of the dangers Black Americans experience every day. As we combatted COVID-19, it became clear the pandemic disproportionately affects Black communities – layering on to these experiences. It was time for us to lean in even more.
We prioritized listening and learning with our colleagues, families and communities – an urgent endeavor demanding our time, our attention and our passion. We built bridges through honest conversations on race, power and privilege. Through this introspection we have grown personally and as leaders.
Today, the Synchrony leadership team reaffirms our commitment. We enter 2021 a changed team – better prepared and even more committed to diversity, inclusion and the pursuit of equality.
Together we will continue to listen, learn and grow. Facing the future with a renewed appreciation of the task at hand, we are emboldened to take meaningful action. Within Synchrony and in our communities, we live the values of our company: honest, passionate, driven, caring, responsible and bold. We will lead by example.
Synchrony will do its part.
